Title:  1-3  The Elves and the Shoemaker

Summary:  A fairy tale that many of us heard as children, originally told by the Brothers Grimm.  An elderly cobbler and his wife were generous, but poor.  Soon their hopes are gone and decide to make one last pair of shoes, with their hopes riding on the leather he was going to make the shoes with.  Elves come in the night and change his fate.

Spelling Words:  Words spelled with Long /a/, /i/, /o/, and /u/.

Words:  label, vine, bonus, wild, gate, huge, zero, made, spoke, use.

Challenge Words:  basic, program, usual, finest, caper.

Vocabulary Words: 

Leather (n):  material made from the skin of an animal.  Shoemaker (n):  someone who makes shoes.  Elves (n):  a type of fairy.  Finest (n):  nicest.  Flash (n):  an instant.

Grammar Concept:  I can identify helping verbs and linking verbs in a sentence.  A helping verb helps the main verb in a sentence tell when something will happen, has happened, or is happening.   We are planning to look for shells tomorrow.  A linking verb joins, connects, the parts of a sentence to make it complete.  The fish was swimming by our boat.    Hint:  have, has, had, do, does, did, be, am, is, are, was, were, been …Just look for some of these :).
